Scalebound is an action role playing title that is developed by Platinum Games who in the past have been responsible for bringing us titles like Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and The Legend of Kora. The game is being developed on the Unreal Engine 4 and will be released for the Xbox One and Windows. In the game, the player assumes the role of Drew, a human who is bonded to a dragon called Thuban. Scalebound is being directed by Japanese game designer Hideki Kamiya.
Although not a lot is known about the game as of now, pre alpha footage which was showcased during Xbox’s Gamescom event shows a highly detailed a fluid looking gameplay style in which both Drew and Thuban play important roles. The developers of the game have said that they wanted to make a game that lays emphasis on graphics and the quality of visual content.
The player usually controls Drew, with Thuban being controlled via in game AI alongside the commands that the player gives to the Dragon while in combat. However, the player may also take control of Thuban (this is called Dragon Link Mode), however that makes Drew vulnerable to attacks. The game also tries to portray Thuban as an ally and not a pet and this is very apparent in the style in which combat takes place in the game. This ideology is also accentuated by the fact that if one of the two primary characters is killed in battle, the other will die too.
Weapons and Character Abilites
Scalebound features enemies of gigantic sizes (which is not unlike Platinum Games’ other titles) and Drew and Thuban must use a variety of combat abilities to defeat them. Drew uses melee weapons such as swords and also ranged weapons like arrows and guns (the gameplay footage also shows a mine in action). The weapons will wear with use and will eventually lose their durability. Alongside all of the aforementioned goodies, Drew also has a dragon arm which essentially allows him to heal Thuban if need be.
Drew can also transform into a half human – half dragon looking hybrid creature that significantly improves his abilities. When large enemies are defeated, they give off gems, but that only works if they are intact and not completely obliterated by the dragon. The gems are further used to level up and gain skill points. The game also allows for the modification of the dragon companion but not the player himself. A four player co op mode was also announced for the game.
Cancellation and Trademark Renewal
On 9th January 2017, Microsoft announced that it had cancelled Scalebound. This resulted in a huge backlash from the gaming community and Xbox loyalists alike. Many claimed that Microsoft was making things worse for Xbox since there are not a lot of Xbox exclusive titles.
However, in May of 2017 Microsoft renewed its trademark for the game which fuelled speculation that the game was being rethought under a new developer altogether. We will make sure to keep you up to date on all news regarding Scalebound.
